(I wish they would have done the zoom in part of the video too, but maybe next year!)Īnd if you'd like to explore the scales of the universe for yourself, check out the Universe in a Nutshell app from Tim Urban and Kurzgesagt - you can zoom in and out as far as you want and interact with and learn about objects along the way. The new video zooms out to the limits of our current observational powers, to about 100 billion light years away, 1000X wider than in the original. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell.Īs an homage, the BBC and particle physicist Brian Cox have created an updated version that reflects what we've learned about the universe in the 45 years since Powers of Ten was made. When multiplying a whole number by a positive power of ten, just count how many zero(s) you have and attached that to. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward - into the hand of the sleeping picnicker - with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Watch Powers of Ten, the Eames film that was inspired by the 1957 book Cosmic View: The Universe in 40 Jumps by Kees Boeke. Whole numbers multiplied by powers of 10. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. The following information is from a third party site and has rankings and athlete information from recognised competitions for UK athletes. The game is cooperative because all the players work together to take down “the Big Bad”. The Adventure book is broken into “Chapters” and depending on whether you win or lose, you go to a different “Chapter” (kind of like Choose Your Own Adventure games). The Adventure book outlines the adventure the players will experience. One book is the “rulebook” (although not quite, see below) and the other is the Adventure Book. Nice Linen finished cards: these are Villain cards with a color in the upper left corner! This color activates one of the Big Bad’s abilites! The Lost Village comes with a bunch of new cards and two books. SO: you will have to have played all the way through Part I, saved/remembered what new cards you upgraded to, and THEN you can finally play The Lost Village! Unboxing and Components Once you are done playing the Ruin of Thandar, you will have a lot of cards from that expansion explicitly for your character!! These cards are needed for The Lost Village! Why do you need the Part I Ruin of Thandar expansion? In the campaign game, you “level up” as you play (getting new cards, new Skills, new Abilities, and new Treasure). In addition to (a) Hero Realms and (b) The Character Packs (one pack for each player), you also need (c) The Ruin of Thandar expansion Part I. The Character Packs give you a little more specialization (almost but not quite Variable Player Powers), and a little more flavor to the game: Each Character Pack has 18 cards (replacing the base starting cards, and adding two “ability” cards). The new expansion is smaller: it doesn’t quite has the same amount of cardsīesides the base game of Hero Realms, you also need the Character Packs (see below). I liked the original Ruin of Thandar cooperative expansion so much it made #4 on my Top 10 Cooperative Deckbuilder Games (and it probably should have made my Top 10 Games That Can Be Played Fully Cooperatively, since the base game REQUIRES these expansions to be fully cooperative). For those of you who don’t know, Hero Realms is a competitive, 1 vs.1, deck-building game. The Lost Village itself is Part II of that campaign (with more obviously planned). The Ruin of Thandar is a cooperative expansion campaign for Hero Realms. What Is The Ruin Of Thandar Campaign? Hero Realms and the needed components and expansions to play the Ruin of Thandar campaign! There are a lot of Kickstarters that have already gotten their copy, so I am late to the party, BUT it also seems to be sold out already at most online stores at the time of this writing. It was originally a Kickstarter, but I ended up ordering it from Miniatures Market and got it as soon as it came to retail. 29, 2020), I received Part II of the Ruin Of Thandar Campaign: The Lost Village in the mail. Nobody I talked with in the world of doomsday prepping was sweating AI very much, compared with all the other threats they perceive. “What matters is nukes and Yellowstone and meteors,” Hubbard said. Even the tech billionaire he recently worked with didn’t bring up AI as a concern. ![]() Hubbard, one of the biggest names in commercial prepping, told me that his archetypal customer is a 60-year-old man who recently sold his business for $30 million, bought a ranch, and now wants a bunker. This AI freakout is exposing what has long been true about Silicon Valley’s doomsday preppers: a disaster-proof compound might not save the richest tech moguls, but perhaps that was never the whole point. “I don’t think a single person has brought up AI,” he said. I asked Hubbard if anyone had cited AI to him as their motivator for purchasing a bunker. So this should be a moment for AI-doomsday preppers, with frazzled Silicon Valley millionaires shelling out enormous sums of money to shield themselves from whatever AI does to us all. “If we go ahead on this everyone will die,” Eliezer Yudkowsky, the senior research fellow at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, has written, “including children who did not choose this and did not do anything wrong.” That’s scary.” Other people have gone further. “Take the difference and propagate it forwards. “Look at how it was five years ago and how it is now,” he told The New York Times. Earlier this month, the pioneering researcher Geoffrey Hinton quit his role at Google and warned about the dangers of AI. And a 2016 New Yorker profile of Sam Altman quoted the OpenAI CEO as saying he had “guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to” in the event of super-contagious viruses, nuclear war, and AI “that attacks us.”Įxtreme predictions about what AI could do to the world have since grown louder among a vocal minority of those who work in the field. In 2018, Bloomberg reported that seven tech entrepreneurs had purchased bunkers in New Zealand. In his book Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires, Douglas Rushkoff delves into what he calls “The Mindset”-the idea among Silicon Valley doomsday preppers that “winning” means earning enough money to escape the damage that befalls everyone else. Many of his clients work in tech: Although the prepper movement in America spans the upper and middle classes, the left and the right, Silicon Valley has in recent years become its epicenter. “When the war broke out in Ukraine, my phone was ringing every 45 seconds for about two weeks,” he said. Lately, interest in his underground bunkers has been booming. His Texas-based company sells bunkers with bulletproof doors and concrete walls to people willing to shell out several thousand-and up to millions-of dollars for peace of mind about potential catastrophic events. “World War III, China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Joe Biden-you know, everything that’s messed up in the world,” Ron Hubbard, the CEO of Atlas Survival Shelters, told me. Similarly, if you are opting for a clip-on or detachable privacy screen, measure the entire top of your computer monitor and its thickness for a good fit. Your screen should be well-lit so you know exactly where it ends when measuring. Flat-panel screens can be measured from each side and diagonally. When measuring a computer screen, you need to check if the entire monitor is a flat glass panel screen or if it has a plastic casing on it.
